Local and Organic Food

I have a confession to make: I love tractors...and farmers. I love supporting the many farmers in our area. One of the first places I went when my family moved to Orillia was the Saturday Farmer's Market. I was so excited to see that we have organically grown vegetables and naturally raised meat products right here in Simcoe County.

I get lots of questions about where to buy organic food. So here is what I suggest: there is a great website and map printed every couple of years showing where the local farms are located.

Check it out at http://www.simcoecountyfarmfresh.ca. Some examples of organic farms that are close to us include:
  • McBride's Organic Farm - fresh veggies, pastered beef
  • Nicholyn Farms - organic and traditionally raised beef, pork, chicken, lamb, turkey, elk, buffalo, venison
  • Avalon Orchards - organic apples, cider
  • Lavendar Hills Farm - honey ans beeswax products
  • among many others

Never be afraid to ask your farmer for recommendations for other organic farms when there are products they don't carry. Most farmers will gladly help out their friends and refer you to other organic farmers.

Organic food, not only tastes better, it is grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers which are known to have harmful effects on our health. Organic farmers are able to stay healthier themselves because they are not exposed to harsh chemicals. They are helping to support the health of our planet by using sustainable farming methods. Sustainable farming methods don't strip the earth of nutrients, but rather re-introduce nutrients back into the soil and provide healthy environments for bees and other pollinators.
